Area

36.9 hectares

Seedlings planted in the area

17 155 seedlings planted so far. The next plantings will be carried out in 2023

p

Tree species

Pines (Pinus sylvestris) are planted in the area

Location

SITE DESCRIPTION

The area is dried peatlands, retired from peat production, in the municipality of Vaala. There is still residual peat in the area, causing carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

In addition to carried out plantings, there are some seedlings in the area that need measures to ensure optimal growth. Ash fertilization has been done in the area, which creates stellar conditions for the growth of seedlings to be planted as well as existing ones. In addition, any vegetation interfering with the growth of the seedlings is removed.

MEASURES

All measures are taken with the expertise and experience of the regional forest management association which has the best knowledge of local forestry and area management. Work in the area is ordered from local entrepreneurs.

K

Ash fertilization

Ash fertilization has been done in autumn 2022

K

Rehabilitation of ditches

The ditches in the area are mainly in a good shape. Further inspections will, however, take place later.

M

Reversal mounding

The action will take place slightly before plantings.

Tuulisuo site had its first seedling plantings done as 17 155 pine tree seedlings began their journey in becoming a carbon sink. Fin Forelia Oy delivered the seedlings from their Rovaniemi nursery garden. Loggers Risto Rantala and Juha Kauppinen from a regional forest management association Rokua Paljakka executed the seedling plantings. The survival opportunities of seedlings are maximized by performing reversal mounding on the site. By doing so, the seedlings grow slightly above the rest of the vegetation, thus minimizing the negative effects hay may have on them. A local entrepreneur Leinonen Pentti J. Tmi performed the necessary soil cultivation work.

It wasn’t, for now, necessary to rehabilitate the ditches as the water balance was optimal. The situation is, however, monitored by regular inspections.

The site will be fertilized with ash this autumn. Wood ash balances the soil nutrients, providing excellent growing conditions for the planted seedlings.
