Location

SITE DESCRIPTION

The area is dried peatlands, retired from peat production. There is still residual peat in the area, causing carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

Ash fertilization has been done in the area, which creates stellar conditions for the growth of seedlings to be planted as well as existing ones. In addition, any vegetation interfering with the growth of the seedlings is removed.

MEASURES

All measures are taken with the expertise and experience of the regional forest management association which has the best knowledge of local forestry and area management. Work in the area is ordered from local entrepreneurs.

K

Ash fertilization

Ash fertilization has been done.

K

Rehabilitation of ditches

The ditches in the area are mainly in a good shape. Further inspections will, however, take place later.

M

Reversal mounding

The action will take place slightly before plantings.

YEAR 2023

On the Kohiseva site, the plantings have continued in addition to the 5,000 seedlings planted last year. Now in the summer of 2023, 40,000 pine trees were planted. The seedlings were delivered by Fin Forelia Oy and the planting contract was carried out by Oulunjärvi metsäpalvelu Oy. The chance of survival of planted seedlings is maximized by reversal mounding. This allows the seedling to grow a little higher than the rest of the ground, so that the grass does not harm the growth. Land preparation work was performed by Koneurakointi Petri Leinonen Ky.

There was no need to rehabilitate the ditches at this stage because the water balance was fine. The situation is monitored with regular inspection visits.

Ash fertilization had already been done before. Wood ash corrects the nutrient balance of the peatland and creates an excellent conditions for good growth.

Now the seedlings are allowed to grow and take roots in peace and there is no need to take action in the field for a few years. Usually, after about 4-5 years, the plantings are lightly cleared so that the seedlings get the sunlight and space they need to grow.
